Acclaimed DC Musician Joins American Red Cross in Recognizing US Troops During the Holidays Marcus Johnson—a DC-based musician, lawyer, entrepreneur, educator and community activist—will join the American Red Cross at their DC headquarters to launch the Holiday Mail for Heroes program, a nationwide card-writing campaign to recognize US Troops serving abroad during the holiday season.

Washington, DC—Over the next several months, tens of thousands of men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, will spend this holiday season away from their families and loved ones, while bravely answering the call of duty on foreign soil and hostile lands across the world. In an effort to bridge the gap between the front line and the home front, the American Red Cross will be sending a “touch of home” to our troops, with the start of the annual Holiday Mail for Heroes Program. Now in its fifth consecutive year, this card-writing program has created a groundswell of support, patriotism, and gratitude for the efforts and sacrifice made every day by our men and women in uniform. Joining the cause  this  year  will  be  Billboard  recording  artist,  Marcus  Johnson  who  will  lend  his  special blend of rhythm and jazz, to the opening ceremonies of this campaign, on the steps of the Red Cross Headquarters in Washington, DC.

Crown Thy Good With Brotherhood

The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes are partnering to ensure all Americans have an opportunity to send a touch of home this holiday season to members of the U.S. military, veterans, and their families, many of whom will be far away from home this holiday season. Beginning this fall and running throughout the holiday season, the Red Cross is working with Pitney Bowes, a mail stream technology company, to collect and distribute holiday cards to American service members, veterans and their families in the United States and around the world. “The process is very simple and takes no time at all,” said Peter Macias of the American Red Cross. “All you need is a pen and apiece of paper to drop a short note of thanks and appreciation. All of the cards are sent to  one  central P.O. box  right outside of DC,  where they are organized and shipped around the world to our men and women in uniform.  All of the mailing  instructions  and card  guidelines are available  and easily accessible  on  our  website: www.redcross.org/holidaymail .” The launch event will be  held  on  Thursday,  November  3,  2011  at  1100hrs  outside of the Red Cross building in Washington, DC. “For the launch of the Holiday Mail for Heroes Program this year, we were delighted to enlist DC’s own Marcus Johnson, who is certain to get this campaign off to a rocking start,” added Macias. When asked, Johnson was equally enthusiastic about his participation in the holiday campaign. “I’ve always said that ‘it only takes a minute  to  make  someone  else’s   day,’ said the musical entrepreneur. “But in the case of our U.S. troops who are serving abroad, this is a wonderful opportunity for each of us as civilian citizens who routinely think about their fellow Americans in uniform, to actually take a moment and do something tangible to reach out to them in writing and in love. It’s a chance to say ‘thank you for your service; your  actions  are  not  overlooked  and  your sacrifices will never not forgotten.”

About Marcus Johnson

As a DC-area native, Johnson continues to amaze audiences and delight critics with his diverse background and equally impressive list of involvements and achievements. About the American Red Cross

Since its founding in 1881 by visionary leader Clara Barton, the American Red Cross has been the nation’s premier emergency response organization. As part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services, always with the aim of preventing and relieving suffering. Today, in addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross offers compassionate services in five other areas: community services that help the needy; support and comfort for military members and their families; the collection, processing and distribution of lifesaving blood and blood products; educational programs that promote health and safety; and international relief and development programs.
